On equations of 3rd and of 4th degree: from Galois and Lagrange to Morley's miracle
Morley's theorem in the Euclidian plane associates to any triangle 18 equilateral triangles constructed using intersections of the trisectors of the angles. The main result of the paper is a generalisation of that theorem in a result on algebraic cubic and quartic equations on a field.\N\NThe proof uses Galois theory and the algebraic proof given by the first author in [in: Les relations entre les mathématiques et la physique théorique. Bures-sur-Yvette: Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques. 43--46 (1998; Zbl 1006.51010)].\N\NThe article is very well written and enjoyable to read (a combination of elementary Euclidean geometry and Galois theory). It's very encouraging for mathematical researchers (especially younger ones) to know that J. Diximier is still active in research despite being born on May 26, 1924.
