On p -parts of conjugacy class sizes and the index of the p -core
Let \(p\) be a prime and \(G\) a finite group. The paper studies conditions on the \(p\)-parts of conjugacy class sizes of \(p\)-regular elements and their consequences for the \(p\)-part of the index of the \(p\)-core \(O_p(G)\).\N\NThe main result is Theorem A: If \(p^2\) does not divide \(|G:C_G(g)|\) for each \(p\)-regular element \(g\) of \(G\), then \(|G:O_p(G)|_p \le p^2\). An explicit construction is provided to show that this bound is sharp.
