Let \(K\) be a number field and let \(E\) be an elliptic curve over \(K\). By the Mordell-Weil theorem, the group \(E(K)\) of \(K\)-rational points is finitely generated, so that \(E(K)\widetilde{=} E(K)_{\mathrm{tors}}\oplus\mathbb{Z}^{r_K}\), where \(r_K\geq 0\) is a non-negative integer called the rank, and \(E(K)_{\mathrm{tors}}\) is a finite group called the torsion subgroup of \(E\) over \(K\).\N\NThe author classifies all groups that can arise as \(E(\mathbb{Q}(\zeta_p))_{\mathrm{tors}}\) up to isomorphism for any prime \(p\), where \(\zeta_p\) is a primitive \(p\)-th root of unity. By doing so, the author also classify \(E(\mathbb{Q}(\mu_{p^{\infty}}))_{\mathrm{tors}}\), where \(\mathbb{Q}(\mu_{p^{\infty}})\) is the field obtained by adjoing to \(\mathbb{Q}\) all \(p^n\)-th roots of unity for all positive integers \(n\). When \(p-1\) is not divisible by small integers such as \(3\), \(4\), \(5\), \(7\), or \(11\), the author obtains a sharper classification.\N\NFor any abelian number field \(K\), the torsion subgroup \(E(K)_{\mathrm{tors}}\) is a subgroup of \(E(\mathbb{Q}^{ab})_{\mathrm{tors}}\). The methods of the present paper also provide tools to eliminate non-realized torsion structures from the list of possibilities for \(E(K)_{\mathrm{tors}}\).
