Monge is known for his course in descriptive geometry given at the École Normale and the École Polytechnique. The book appeared in 1799. Yet as early as 1766, Monge already developed a theory of shadows which must be regarded as a precursor of his descriptive geometry. This critical edition of Monge's \textit{Traité des ombres} positions it in its historical context and provides a commentary.
