Let \(G\) denote a finite simple graph with the vertex set \(\{x_1,x_2,\dots,x_n\}\) and let \(t\in\{1,2,\dots,n\}\). A sequence \(x_{i_1},x_{i_2},\dots,x_{i_t}\) is called a \textit{\(t\)-path} of \(G\) if the edges \((x_{i_1},x_{i_2}),(x_{i_2},x_{i_3}),\dots,(x_{i_{t-1}},x_{i_t})\) are distinct. Write \(I_t(G)\) for the ideal generated by all monomials \(x_{i_1}x_{i_2}\dots,x_{i_t}\), where \(x_{i_1},x_{i_2},\dots,x_{i_t}\) denotes a \(t\)-path of \(G\), and call it \textit{\(t\)-path ideal} of \(G\). Clearly, this ideal is square-free in the polynomial ring \(k[x_1,x_2,\dots,x_n]\) and generalizes the classical definition of edge ideals, where \(k\) denotes a field. The article under review aims to explore the \(t\)-path ideals and their Rees algebras for some cycles \(C_n\).\N\NAfter presenting fundematals, in Section 3, the authors first determine the dimension of the fiber cone \(F(I_t(C_n))\) of the \(t\)-path ideal \(I_t(C_n)\) and prove that \(F(I_t(C_n))\) is a polynomial algebra if and only if \(n\) and \(t\) are coprime. A nice result in Theorem 3.2 characterizes the defining ideal of \(F(I_t(C_n))\).\N\NIn Section 4, they focus on the structure of the Rees ring of \(I_t(C_n)\) when \(t=n-2\). Using Grobner basis techniques and assuming \(n>2\), the authors derive the following strong results: (1) The Rees ring of \(I_{n-2}(C_n)\) is a normal Cohen-Macaulay domain; (2) \(I_{n-2}(C_n)\) is of linear type if \(n\) is odd, as well as it is of fiber type if \(n\) is even; (3) \((I_{n-2}(C_n))^s\) has linear quotients for all \(s=1,2,\dots\). Moreover, the Hilbert series and the Cohen-Macaulay type of the Rees ring of \(I_{n-2}(C_n)\) have been calculated.\N\NThey also apply a similar argument to the case when \(t=\frac{n}{2}\) in Section 5 and obtain that the Rees ring of \(I_{n/2}(C_n)\) is a normal Cohen-Macaulay domain and \(I_{n/2}(C_n)\) is of fiber type. More discussion and a conjecure about when \(I_{t}(C_n)\) is of fiber type was proposed in Section 6.\N\NIn summary, this nice article contributes many new and important results in the monomial ideal theory. The explicit characterization on the stuctures of the Rees rings of these ideals might have potential applications in graph theory, geometry, or ideal theory.
