A construction of the Shephard-Todd group G₃₂ through the Weyl group of type E₆
In this note, the author provides a new construction of the complex reflection group \(G_{32}\) in the classification of \textit{G. C. Shephard} and \textit{J. A. Todd} [Can. J. Math. 6, 274--304 (1954; Zbl 0055.14305)] using the second exterior power representation of \(\mathrm{SL}_4(\mathbb{C})\) and its relationship with the Weyl group of type \(E_6\), denoted \(G_{35}\) in Shephard-Todd terminology.\N\NIt is classically known that the derived subgroup of \(G_{32}\), modulo a scalar center of order \(2\), is isomorphic to the derived subgroup of the Weyl group \(E_6\). The main purpose of the article is to make this isomorphism explicit and to exhibit a natural and elementary construction of \(G_{32}\) from \(E_6\), analogously to the author's earlier work on \(G_{31}\) [Bull. Math. Soc. Sci. Math. Roum., Nouv. Sér. 45(93), No. 3--4, 133--143 (2002; Zbl 1084.20509)].\N\NThe construction proceeds by lifting the derived subgroup of \(E_6\) to a subgroup \(W\) of \(\mathrm{SL}_4(\mathbb{C})\). The author shows that \(W\) is generated by complex reflections of order \(3\) and determines the number and type of reflections explicitly. The group \(W\) is proven to be primitive and irreducible, with degrees \(12, 18, 24, 30\) and of order \(155\,520\), matching those of \(G_{32}\). This leads to the identification \(W \cong G_{32}\), providing an alternative, conceptual realization of \(G_{32}\) that does not rely on the Shephard-Todd classification.
