Let \(G\) be a finite group. Let \(\chi \in \mathrm{Irr}(G)\) be an irreducible complex character of \(G\) and let \(a(\chi)\) be the minimal degree of any character inducing \(\chi\). Note that \(\chi\) is primitive if and only if \(a(\chi) = \chi(1)\), while \(\chi\) is monomial if and only if \(a(\chi) = 1\). \textit{M. L. Lewis} [J. Algebra 183, No. 3, 864--897 (1996; Zbl 0868.20003)] showed that if \(G\) is an \(\mathsf{M}\)-group and \(H\) is a maximal subgroup of \(G\) of \(p\)-power index with \(p > 2\), then for every irreducible character \(\xi \in \mathrm{Irr}(H)\) of \(p\)-power degree one has \(a(\xi)^2 \, \big |\, |G : H|\).\N\NThe authors give a new and substantially simpler proof of this result. The main result (Theorem A) strengthens Lewis' theorem [loc. cit.] by allowing \(G\) to be any \(p\)-solvable group with \(p\) an odd prime and by replacing the assumption that \(G\) is an \(\mathsf{M}\)-group with a weaker assumption on the monomiality of the irreducible characters in \(\mathrm{Irr}(G|\varphi)\) for a given \(\varphi \in \mathrm{Irr}(L)\) lying under \(\xi\).\N\NThe proof proceeds through an analysis of normal triples and character-fives in the sense of \textit{I. M. Isaacs} [Am. J. Math. 95, 594--635 (1973; Zbl 0277.20008)] and uses a reduction process via Clifford theory and multilinear reductions to linear limits. A key ingredient is the statement that if \(\chi\) is a monomial character of \(G\) of \(p\)-power degree lying over \(\psi \in \mathrm{Irr}(N)\), then every linear limit of the triple \((G,N,\psi)\) is nilpotent (Theorem B). The result is applied to recover \textit{E. C. Dade}'s [Math. Z. 178, 401--420 (1981; Zbl 0451.20007)] classical result that constituents of restrictions of monomial characters of \(p\)-power degree remain monomial.
