On the local converse theorem for split SO₂l
Let \(F\) be a non-Archimedean local field of characteristic \(p\not=2\) or characteristic zero, and let \(G\) be the \(F\)-points of a connected reductive group. For an irreducible generic representation \(\pi\) of \(G\), an irreducible generic representation \(\tau\) of \(\mathrm{GL}_n(F)\), a non-trivial additive character \(\psi\) of \(F\), and \(s\in \mathbb{C}\), one can define a local twisted gamma factor \(\gamma(s,\pi\times\tau,\psi)\) using either the Rankin-Selberg method or the Langands-Shahidi method. The local converse theorems for \(G\) seek to uniquely identify a representation \(\pi\) from its twisted gamma factors. In recent years, the local converse theorems have been established for various groups, see for example [\textit{D. Jiang} and \textit{D. Soudry}, Ann. Math. (2) 157, No. 3, 743--806 (2003; Zbl 1049.11055); \textit{H. Jacquet} and \textit{B. Liu}, Am. J. Math. 140, No. 5, 1399--1422 (2018; Zbl 1451.11042); \textit{J. Chai}, J. Eur. Math. Soc. (JEMS) 21, No. 6, 1703--1728, (2019; Zbl 1476.11082); \textit{Q. Zhang}, Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 371, No. 8, 5631--5654 (2019; Zbl 1427.22019)].\N\NThe difficulty for even special orthogonal groups lies in the existence of an outer automorphism. In this paper the authors prove a local converse theorem for split \(\mathrm{SO}_{2\ell}\), up to an outer automorphism. Let \(\pi\) and \(\pi^\prime\) be irreducible \(\psi\)-generic representations of split \(\mathrm{SO}_{2\ell}(F)\) with the same central character. The authors prove that, if \(\gamma(s,\pi\times\tau,\psi)=\gamma(s,\pi^\prime \times\tau,\psi)\) for all irreducible generic representations \(\tau\) of \(\mathrm{GL}_n(F)\) with \(n\le \ell\), then either \(\pi\cong \pi^\prime\), or \(\pi\cong \pi^{\prime c}\), where \(\pi^{\prime c}\) is the outer automorphism of \(\pi^\prime\) given by \(\pi^{\prime c}(g)=\pi^\prime(cgc^{-1})\) for \(c\in \mathrm{O}_{2\ell}(F)-\mathrm{SO}_{2\ell}(F)\).\N\NThe proof uses the theory of Howe vectors and partial Bessel functions. We remark that a local converse theorem for quasi-split \(\mathrm{SO}_{2\ell}\) up to an outer automorphism is established by Haan-Kim-Kwon [\textit{J. Haan} et al., ``The local converse theorem for quasi-split \(\mathrm{O}_{2n}\) and \(\mathrm{SO}_{2n}\), Preprint, \url{arXiv:2301.12693}] by using the method of theta correspondence. We also remark that a refined local converse theorem for split \(\mathrm{SO}_4\) is established by the reviewer and \textit{Q. Zhang} [``On a refined local converse theorem for \(\mathrm{SO}(4)\), Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 152, No. 11, 4959--4976 (2024; Zbl 1560.22054)], by introducing an additional local twisted exterior square gamma factor of \(\mathrm{SO}_4\).
