The authors discuss the issue of global well-posedness of weakly hyperbolic Cauchy problems with variable multiplicities. The model of interest is \N\begin{align*} \N&& -D_t^2 u + \sum_{j=1}^n a_j(t,x)D_{x_j}^2 u + \sum_{j=1}^n b_j(t,x)D_{x_j}u +c(t,x)u=g(t,x), \\\N&& \qquad \,\,\,\,u(0,x)=u_0(x),\,\,\,u_t(0,x)=u_1(x). \tag{1}\N\end{align*}\N The complete symbol\N\[\Na=a(t,x,\xi):=\sum_{j=1}^n \big(a_j(t,x)\xi_j^2 + b_j(t,x)\xi_j\big)+ c(t,x)\N\]\Nsatisfies the lower bound estimate\N\[\N|a(t,x,\xi)|\geq C \lambda(t)^2\langle x\rangle^2 \langle \xi \rangle^2\N\]\Nand the upper bound estimates\N\[\N\big|D_t^kD_x^\alpha D_\xi^\beta a(t,x,\xi)\big|\leq C_{k\alpha \beta} \lambda(t)^2\langle x\rangle^{2-\alpha|} \langle \xi \rangle^{2-|\beta|}\Big(\frac{\lambda(t)}{\Lambda(t)}|\ln \Lambda(t)|\Big)^k,\N\]\Nwhere \(\lambda=\lambda(t)\) is a shape function. So, the complete symbol belongs to the SG-class of order \((2,2)\) and possesses fast oscillating behavior in time. The authors prove well-posedness in evolution spaces valued in Schwartz space or in weighted Sobolev spaces \(H^{s,\sigma}(\mathbb{R}^n)\). In the second case the solution reveals an at most finite loss of regularity and an at most finite loss of decay with respect to initial data. The main goal is to determine the parametrix to (1) that allows to conclude the desired well-posedness results immediately.\N\NTo construct the parametrix one has to verify on the symbol level a suitable division of the extended phase space into zones, to introduce hierarchies of parameter-dependent SG-symbol classes and a diagonalization procedure. On the operator level one has to define generalized pseudodifferential operators and Fourier integral operators of SG-type. Composition properties and existence of parametrix for elliptic pseudodifferential operators are proved. Finally, the parametrix is constructed. Here the authors follow a procedure (proposed by \textit{A. Kubo} and \textit{M. Reissig} [Commun. Partial Differ. Equations 28, No. 7--8, 1471--1502 (2003; Zbl 1036.35118)]) and modify it to the SG-case to determine step by step the phase function and the amplitude function. Among other things a Egorov-type theorem is proved.\N\NIt would be interesting to determine the precise loss of regularity and loss of decay.
