On the zero-stability of the 3-step BDF-formula on nonuniform grids

A bound (approximately equal to 1.292) on the quotient of adjacent stepsizes is derived so that the three step backward differentiation formula is zero-stable for any sequence of stepsizes satisfying this bound.
