Maxima may be defined with respect to arbitrary relations (not necessarily ordering relations). Theorems of the following type are proved: Given a binary relation \(\rho\neq 0\) on a set M. Every nonempty subset of M has maxima but M has not, precisely when \(2\leq card(M)<\infty\) and \(\rho\) is the complement of a cyclic permutation relation on M.
