Abstract: Let be an odd prime and let denote the finite field with elements. Suppose that is a primitive root of . Define the permutation by au_g(b):=egin{cases} g^b,& ext{if }g^bin{mathcal H}_p,\ -g^b,& ext{if }g^b
otin{mathcal H}_p,\ end{cases} for each , where is viewed as a subset of . In this paper, we investigate the sign of . For example, if , then (-1)^{| au_g|}=(-1)^{frac{1}{4}(h(-4p)+2)} for every primitive root , where is the class number of the imaginary quadratic field .
