Abstract: We establish a motivic version of Adams' vanishing line of slope 1/2 in the cohomology of the motivic Steenrod algebra over the complex numbers.

The authors study the existence of vanishing lines in the motivic Adams spectral sequence over \(\mathbb{C}\). Precisely, they show that all the elements above a line of slope \(\frac{1}{2}\), all the elements in the \(E_2\)-page are detected in the \(h_1\)-local setting (they have a non trivial image after inverting \(h_1\) in the \(E_2\)-page). This parallels the classical Adams vanishing line of slope \(\frac{1}{2}\) in stable homotopy theory. The data produced by the second author [``Classical and motivic Adams charts, \url{arXiv:1401.4983v3}] indicates that this result is optimal. One difficulty is to adapt the classical machinery to \(A\)-modules, where \(A\) is the motivic Steenrod algebra, and to overcome the complexity coming from the fact that the base ring \(\mathbb{M}_2\) (the motivic cohomology of a point), is not a field. To show their main result, the authors first reduce to the case of \[ \mathrm{Ext}_{A}(M, \mathbb{M}_2), \] where \(M\) is a \(Sq^1\)-acyclic \(A\)-module, using that the kernel of the natural map \[ A // A(0) \rightarrow \mathbb{M}_2 \] is \(Sq^1\)-acyclic. The theorem then follows from an explicit computation of \[ \mathrm{Ext}_{A}(A(0), C_{\eta}), \] where \(C_{\eta}\) is an \(A\)-module related to the multiplication by \(h_1\).
