On serial quasi-hereditary rings
Homological dimension in associative algebras (16E10) Finite rings and finite-dimensional associative algebras (16P10) Artinian rings and modules (associative rings and algebras) (16P20) Chain conditions on other classes of submodules, ideals, subrings, etc.; coherence (associative rings and algebras) (16P70)
In the paper quasi hereditary rings (in the sense of \textit{E. Cline}, \textit{B. Parshall} and \textit{L. Scott} [J. Algebra 117, 504-521 (1988; Zbl 0659.18011)]) are studied and in particular the question when serial \((=\) generalized uniserial) rings are quasi hereditary. Quasi hereditary rings have finite global dimension, but the converse does not hold. \textit{V. Dlab} and \textit{C. M. Ringel} [Ill. J. Math. 33, 280-291 (1989; Zbl 0666.16014)] gave an example of a non quasi hereditary algebra of global dimension 4. They also showed that algebras of global dimension 2 are quasi hereditary. The aim of the paper is to show that serial rings of global dimension 3 are quasi hereditary and to answer a question of \textit{V. Dlab} [Auslander algebras (Colloq. Univ. Tsukuba, 1988)] by giving an example of an algebra of global dimension 3 which is not quasi hereditary.
