Generalized \(\mathcal L\)-geodesic and monotonicity of the generalized reduced volume in the Ricci flow

Abstract: Suppose M is a complete n-dimensional manifold, nge2, with a metric that evolves by the Ricci flow in Mimes(0,T). For any 0<p<1, (p0,t0)inMimes(0,T), qinM, we define the CalLp-length between p0 and q, CalLp-geodesic, the generalized reduced distance lp and the generalized reduced volume widetildeVp(au), au=t0−t, corresponding to the CalLp-geodesic at the point p0 at time t0. Under the condition on Mimes(0,t0) for some constant c1>0, we will prove the existence of a CalLp-geodesic which minimize the -length between p0 and q for any . This result for the case p=1/2 is conjectured and used many times but no proof of it was given in Perelman's papers on Ricci flow. My result is new and answers in affirmative the existence of such CalL-geodesic minimizer for the Lp(q,au)-length which is crucial to the proof of many results in Perelman's papers on Ricci flow. We also obtain many other properties of the generalized CalLp-geodesic and generalized reduced volume.

This paper studies the Ricci flow on a complete manifold. Generalizing work of G. Perelman, the author defines a family of ``reduced distances \(\mathcal{L}_p\) and corresponding ``reduced volumes. If the evolving metric has a lower bound on the Ricci curvature then the author proves the existence of an \(\mathcal{L}_p\)-minimizing geodesic connecting any two points. Further results related to the monotonicity of the reduced volume are given.
