Im Gegensatz zu den meisten Wissenschaftshistorikern glaubt der Autor, daß es möglich ist, die mathematischen Leistungen des Pythagoras von denen seiner Schüler zu trennen. Aufgrund antiker Quellen nimmt der Autor an, daß Pythagoras sich mit folgenden Problemen beschäftigt hat: Proportionenlehre, Lehre von Gerade und Ungerade, ``Satz des Pythagoras, Bestimmung pythagoreischer Tripel, Konstruktion der ersten beiden regulären Körper (Tetraeder, Würfel). Der Autor widerspricht der Ansicht, daß Pythagoras' Mathematik östliche Wurzeln hat, und behauptet, daß die ägyptische und babylonische Mathematik nicht auf die wissenschaftliche Mathematik der Griechen eingewirkt hat.
