Quasi-arithmetic hyperbolic Coxeter prisms

From MaRDI portal

A hyperbolic Coxeter polyhedron is a convex hyperbolic polyhedron with dihedral angles of the form \(\pi/m\). Such polyhedra are canonical fundamental domains for discrete groups generated by reflections in hyperplanes of hyperbolic spaces \(\mathbb{H}^{d}\). The paper under review studies arithmetic properties of simplicial hyperbolic Coxeter prisms, which are finite-volume hyperbolic Coxeter polyhedra combinatorially equivalent to the product of a simplex and a segment.\N\NAny simplicial prism has precisely two simplicial facets, called its bases. A hyperbolic Coxeter prism is called straight if it has at least one base orthogonal to all adjacent facets. Compact and finite-volume straight hyperbolic Coxeter prisms were classified by \textit{I. M. Kaplinskaya} in [Math. Notes 15, 88--91 (1974; Zbl 0288.50014)].\N\NThe main result (Theorem 1.1) provides a complete classification: In \(\mathbb{H}^{3}\), there are exactly \(31\) arithmetic and \(29\) properly quasi-arithmetic straight Coxeter prisms; in \(\mathbb{H}^{4}\), there are exactly \(3\) arithmetic and \(4\) properly quasi-arithmetic straight Coxeter prisms; in \(\mathbb{H}^{5}\), there are exactly 3 arithmetic and no properly quasi-arithmetic straight Coxeter prisms. The complete list is given in Tables 2, 3 and 4 of the paper.\N\NKaplinskaya's classification includes several infinite families of prisms parametrized by integers, but only finitely many members in each family turn out to be quasi-arithmetic. Theorem 1.2 gives a practical criterion for determining quasi-arithmeticity in several infinite families in \(\mathbb{H}^{3}\): a prism \(P\) is quasi-arithmetic over field \(\mathbf{k}\) if and only if its triangular base \(F\) is arithmetic over \(\mathbf{k}\) and \(a = \cosh d_P\) is totally real, where \(d_P\) denotes the hyperbolic distance between the two bases of \(P\).
