Random Dehn function of groups

From MaRDI portal

The paper introduces a random Dehn function associated with a finitely presented group, a stochastic process on the group and a quasi-geodesic combing. This invariant is defined as the supremum, over all starting points, of the expected filling area of loops obtained by following a sample path and then closing it with the chosen combing. The authors also consider tame Markov chains and tame quasi-homogeneous Markov chains and they show that in the non-amenable setting the resulting random Dehn function is a quasi-isometry invariant for this class of processes.\N\NOne of the main results shows that if \(G\) is a finitely presented acylindrically hyperbolic group whose Dehn function is bounded above by a polynomial, then for every quasi-geodesic combing and every simple random walk one has\N\[\NR_\delta(n) \preceq \frac{n}{\log n}\,\delta_G(\log n) \preceq n^2.\N\]\NIn particular, if \(G\) is hyperbolic, then the random Dehn function is linear, while in the non-hyperbolic polynomial case it is strictly smaller than the usual Dehn function. The proof combines deviation inequalities for the relevant stochastic processes with a decomposition of the random loop into logarithmic pieces whose fillings are controlled by the ordinary Dehn function.\N\NThe paper also establishes analogous conclusions for tame Markov chains on non-elementary hyperbolic groups, non-elementary relatively hyperbolic groups, acylindrically hyperbolic \(3\)-manifold groups and fundamental groups of graphs of groups with nilpotent undistorted edge groups and polynomially bounded Dehn function, as well as for tame quasi-homogeneous Markov chains on mapping class groups, extra-large Artin groups and more generally well-behaved hierarchically hyperbolic groups. In this way the paper confirms, within this model, Gromov's intuition that an averaged filling profile can be asymptotically smaller than the usual Dehn function.
