Realization of finite groups as isometry groups and problems of minimality

From MaRDI portal

The problem of realizing groups by automorphism groups of various structures is an old one in mathematics and its applications.\N\NThe aim of this paper is to study the following problem: given a finite group \(G\), is there a finite subset \(V\) of the Euclidean space \(\mathbb{R}^m\) for some \(m\) such that its group of isometries is isomorphic to \(G\)? This problem was first considered and solved by \textit{M. O. Albertson} and \textit{D. L. Boutin} [J. Algebra 225, No. 2, 947--956 (2000; Zbl 0953.20031)] where they proved the existence of a finite set \(V\subset\mathbb{R}^{|G|-1}\) realizing \(G\). However, the proof provided is not constructive. The authors also introduced the concept of the isometry dimension \(\delta(G)\) of a finite group \(G\), which is the smallest dimension of the Euclidean space in which \(G\) can be realized and posed several interesting questions related to this concept. Most of these questions were answered by \textit{M. M. Patnaik} [J. Algebra 246, No. 2, 641--646 (2001; Zbl 1018.20031)] as a consequence of the main result proved there: the isometry dimension of a finite group \(G\) is equal to the dimension of a minimal-dimensional faithful real representation of \(G\).\N\NIn this paper, for every finite group \(D\), the author constructs explicitly a finite set \(V\subset\mathbb{R}^{|G|}\) of \(|G|(|S| + 1)\) points, where \(S\) is a generating system for \(G\), that realizes \(G\). From here, he deduces that \(V\) can be constructed using atmost \(|G|(\log_2(|G|) + 1)\) points. The author defines \(\alpha(G)\) as the minimum number of points required to realize \(G\) in \(\mathbb{R}^m\) for some \(m\) and establishes that \(|V|\) provides a sharp upper bound for \(\alpha(G)\) when considering minimal generating sets. Finally, he explores the relationship between \(\alpha(G)\) and \(\delta(G)\).
