Reciprocals of false theta functions

From MaRDI portal

The author investigates reciprocals of false theta functions, a class of series that -- unlike classical theta or mock theta functions -- are less symmetric and exhibit interesting, but more elusive, arithmetic properties. The focus is on generating functions of the form \N\[\N\frac{1}{\psi(-q^t, q)} = \sum_{n=0}^\infty c_t(n) q^n, \N\]\Nwhere \(\psi(a,b)\) denotes a false theta function.\N\NThe paper establishes several new results. Section 3 develops congruences satisfied by the coefficients \(c_t(n)\), in particular for \(t=5\) and \(t=9\). These include infinite families of congruences modulo powers of two, some of which are proved using new dissection identities for false theta functions, while others are conjectured from computational evidence. Section 4 provides asymptotic bounds, showing that the coefficients of \(1/\psi(-q^2,q)\) grow exponentially, in contrast to the subexponential growth of partition numbers. An unexpected connection with \textit{G. E. Andrews} and \textit{M. Merca}'s truncated pentagonal number theorem [J. Comb. Theory, Ser. A 119, No. 8, 1639--1643 (2012; Zbl 1246.05014)] is also exhibited, leading to a combinatorial interpretation involving mex partitions. The final section suggests further directions, including possible complete classifications of congruences and more refined asymptotic analysis.\N\NThe work combines elementary generating function manipulations with clever dissections and congruence arguments, yielding new phenomena in the theory of false theta functions. The connection to the truncated pentagonal number theorem enriches the combinatorial perspective. The paper is accessible to readers familiar with partition theory, \(q\)-series, and classical theta function identities, and it opens several promising avenues for further study.
