Regular solution to hyperbolic boundary value problems without regularization
The paper addresses the well-posedness of autonomous boundary value problems for multidimensional hyperbolic systems in Sobolev spaces of higher regularity. It is noteworthy that two qualitatively different types of problems, characteristic and noncharacteristic, are treated using the same methods. The main contribution of the paper is that both the existence and the higher regularity of solutions are established via two direct methods (i.e., without relying on indirect regularization approaches), the Hille-Yosida theorem and the duality method of Lax-Phillips. Both methods share a common feature: they depend on the injectivity of a dual operator, which is guaranteed either by energy estimates or by the dissipativity of certain adjoint operators in higher-order Sobolev spaces.
