Relational formalisation of nonclassical logics

From MaRDI portal

The purpose of this chapter is to present and motivate the application of algebras of relations to the formalisation of nonclassical logics. It is shown that a suitably defined relational logic can serve as a general framework for developing nonclassical means of reasoning that are needed in many application areas. The main advantages of the relational formalisation are uniformity and modularity. The relational logic is a rich formalism that enables us to represent a great variety of nonclassical logical systems. As a consequence, instead of implementing proof systems for each of the logics separately and from scratch, we can create a uniform relational framework in which proof systems for nonclassical logics can be developed in a modular manner. The essential observation leading to the relational formalisation is that the standard algebras of relations -- being joins of a Boolean algebra and a monoid -- constitute, in a sense, a common core of a great variety of nonclassical logics.
