Reliability and performance of object-oriented database systems
The main subject of the book is the object oriented data model GOM (generic object model). Improvements on reliability and efficiency are presented. In the first chapters the author presents the basic principles of GOM and develops a type inference system, which allows a complete verification of type consistency at compile time, and a query language with associative access on persistent objects. As relational database management systems are still superior to object oriented systems the second part of the book is dedicated to optimization techniques. Benchmark tests show that the materialization of functions is very effective especially on backward queries. In his conclusion the author lays stress on the fact, that his research is a first step towards efficient optimization techniques. Subject to further developments are methods of indexing and runtime optimizations.
