Repetitive applications of function as argument in programming languages
In different programming languages there is the possibility that a function \(g\) sequentially applies another function \(f\) to several lists of the actual arguments for \(f\). The authors of this paper called the function \(g\): Mapper. The possibilities of Mapper in different programming languages are different. In this paper the repetitive applications of a function, given as argument, in the programming languages: MATHEMATICA, LISP, APL and HASKELL are considered and compared. The concrete functions and their features in these programming languages are described. The following characteristics of the mentioned programming languages are studied: A: element mappers and tail mappers, B: repetitive applications to a part of list or expression, C: fixed-point style of computation, D: making tables of values and E: reduction. Depending on characteristics A-E some generalizations related to programming languages are stated.NEWLINENEWLINEFor the entire collection see [Zbl 0977.00022].
