Representation ring of the sequence of alternating groups
\textit{A. Liulevicius} [J. Pure Appl. Algebra 19, 259-273 (1980; Zbl 0448.55013)]\ showed that induction and restriction along the canonical inclusions \(S_p\times S_q\to S_{p+q}\) induce a graded, bicommutative Hopf algebra structure on the direct sum of the complex representation rings \(R(S_n)\) (in degree \(2n)\), and he determined the exact structure of this Hopf algebra. The author investigates the corresponding issues for the alternating groups. It turns out that the resulting ring is not commutative, and the natural candidate for comultiplication does not yield a Hopf algebra. This is because the obvious inclusions of \(A_p\times A_q\) and \(A_q\times A_p\) need not be conjugate in \(A_{p+q}\).
