Representations of extensions of simple groups
Let \(G\) be a finite group. An extension of \(G\) by a group \(N\) is a surjective group homomorphism \(\gamma: H \rightarrow G\) with \(\ker \gamma=N\).\N\NLet \(k\) be an algebraically closed field and let \(R_{k}(G)\) be the minimal dimension of a nontrivial projective representation of \(G\) over \(k\). \textit{W. Feit} and \textit{J. Tits} [Can. J. Math. 30, 1092--1102 (1978; Zbl 0358.20014)] asked whether it was possible that an extension \(H\) of a simple group \(G\) could have a nontrivial projective representation \(H \rightarrow \mathrm{PGL}_{m}(k)\) where \(m < R_{k}(G)\). They proved that a nontrivial projective representation of minimal dimension of a finite extension of a nonabelian simple group \(G\) factors through a projective representation of \(G\), except for some groups of Lie type in characteristic \(2\). The precise exceptions for \(G\) were determined by \textit{P. B. Kleidman} and the second author [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 107, No. 2, 315--322 (1989; Zbl 0688.20005)] identifying the exceptional cases as \(\mathrm{Sp}_{2n}(2^{m})\), \(\Omega^{\pm}_{2n}(2^{m})\), \(\mathrm{PSL}_{4}(2^{m})\) and \(\mathrm{G}_{2}(2^{m})\).\N\NIn the paper under review, the authors generalize this result in two significant directions. First, they extend the analysis to all low-dimensional projective representations, rather than focusing solely on those of minimal dimension. This broader perspective allows them to capture finer structural properties of extensions that were previously unexplored. Second, they move beyond simple groups, considering extensions of all characteristically simple groups.\N\NThe paper establishes several new structural results regarding the nature of projective representations of these extensions. In particular, the authors provide explicit conditions under which a low-dimensional projective representation of an extension must factor through the simple quotient. They also determine sharp lower bounds for the dimensions of nontrivial projective representations of such groups, refining previous results in the literature.
