Residually linear abstract groupoids

From MaRDI portal

This paper introduces and investigates residually linear groupoids, a categorical analogue of residually linear groups. A groupoid is residually linear if distinct composable morphisms can be distinguished by finite-dimensional linear representations. The authors relate this notion to residual finiteness and establish several structural results.\N\NThey prove that residual linearity is preserved under equivalence, substructures, products and quotients. In the totally disconnected case, it reduces to the residual linearity of the isotropy groups. A characterization via subnormal series is given and a theorem by \textit{P. Menal} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 68, 27--31 (1978; Zbl 0348.20027)] on nilpotent residually linear groups is extended to groupoids: under finiteness conditions on the center and the commutator subgroupoids residual finiteness follows.\N\NIn the final section, the authors apply their framework to the character groupoid associated with the Hopf algebroid of representative functions on a transitive groupoid. They show that this character groupoid is always residually linear and establish equivalences between the commutativity of the groupoid, cocommutativity of the Hopf algebroid and the commutativity of the character groupoid.
