Running a minimal model program

From MaRDI portal

This expository article aims to introduce the Minimal Model Program (MMP), a major area of research in algebraic geometry. It is written for a general mathematical audience with no prior background in algebraic geometry, beginning with an overview of basic concepts such as projective space, smooth projective varieties, line bundles, and divisors. The discussion gradually progresses to more advanced topics, including contraction morphisms, singularities, and log pairs, which are essential for understanding the MMP. The article is well-structured, with each section providing context and motivation for the next. Sufficient intuition and examples are given to clarify the numerous definitions and ideas presented. After establishing the necessary background, the article concludes with an overview of the MMP: its objectives, the parts that have been resolved and those that remain open, the author's expectations for future research in this area, and the connections between the MMP and other branches of mathematics outside algebraic geometry.
