Semi-classical 2-dimensional Minkowski planes
The author considers 2-dimensional semi-classical Minkowski planes, i.e. Minkowski planes in which there exist two circles or two parallel classes that separate the point set \(\mathbb{S}_1\times \mathbb{S}_1\) into two connected components whose closures carry subgeometries which are induced by the classical real Minkowski plane.\N\NHis main theorem gives infinitely many examples \(\mathcal{M}_k\) of 2-dimensional semi-classical Minkowski planes for any real positive number \(k\) and states that there are no other 2-dimensional semi-classical Minkowski planes.\N\NIdentifying the sphere \(\mathbb{S}_1\) with \(\mathbb{R} \cup \{ \infty \}\), \(\mathcal{M}_k\) is constructed using the orientation-preserving homeomorphism \(f_k: \mathbb{R} \cup \{ \infty \} \longrightarrow \mathbb{R} \cup \{ \infty \} \) fixing \(\infty \) and \(f(x) = kx\) if \(x<0\), \(f(x)=x\) if \(x\geq 0\). The circles of the classical 2-dimensional Minkowski plane \(\mathcal{M}_{\mathrm{cl}}\) are graphs of either the orientation-preserving transformations \(p\in \mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{R})\), or the orientation-reversing transformations \(p \in \mathrm{PGL}(2,\mathbb{R}) \setminus \mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{R}) \). \(\mathcal{M}_k\) coincides with \(\mathcal{M}_{\mathrm{cl}}\), only the orientation-reversing transformations \(p\) are replaced by \(p f_k\). In this way, the circles of \(\mathcal{M}_k\) are obtained.\N\NThe author shows that semi-classical Minkowski planes \(\mathcal{M}\) with separating circles are even classical (\(k=1\)), while for any such plane \(\mathcal{M}\) with separating parallel classes there exists exactly one \(k\in \mathbb{R}\) with \(0 < k \leq 1\) such that \(\mathcal{M}\) is isomorphic to \(\mathcal{M}_k\).
