Separability properties of higher rank GBS groups

This paper classifies rank \(n\) generalized Baumslag-Solitar groups in terms of their separability properties. Specifically, a rank \(n\) generalized Baumslag-Solitar groups arises as the fundamental group of finite graphs of groups with all vertex and edge groups isomorphic to \(\mathbb Z^n\).\N\NAnd the separability properties considered are residually finite (the intersection of all finite-index normal subgroups is trivial), subgroup separable (every finitely generated subgroup is the intersection of finite-index subgroups of \(G\)) and cyclic subgroup separable (every cyclic subgroup is the intersection of finite-index subgroups of \(G\)). Evidently, subgroup separability implies cyclic subgroup separability and cyclic subgroup separability, in turn, implies residual finiteness.\N\NThe authors show that a rank \(n\) generalized Baumslag-Solitar group is residually finite if and only if either\N\begin{itemize}\N\item \(G\cong \mathbb Z^n\ast_\varphi\) is an ascending HNN extension; or\N\item \(G\) is virtually \(\mathbb Z^n\)-by-free.\N\end{itemize}\NThis group is subgroup separable if and only if it is virtually \(\mathbb Z^n\)-by-free. Then they characterize when \(\mathbb Z^n\ast_\varphi\) is cyclic subgroup separable, in terms of the characteristic polynomial of \(\varphi\).
