Singularities of the minimax function

From MaRDI portal

Let \(\pi:E \to B\) be a \(2N\)-dimensional vector bundle over a compact manifold \(B\). A \(C^1\)-function \(F:E \to \mathbb R \) is called quadratic at infinity if there exists a \(C^1\)-function \(\Theta:E \to \mathbb R\) such that \(\Theta\) restricted to a fibre \(\pi^{-1}(q)\) is a quadratic form with index \(N\) and \(F - \Theta \) is uniformly \(C^1\)-bounded on \(E\). Then for each \(q \in B\) there is a critical value \(u_F(q) \in \mathbb R\) of \(F\) restricted to \(\pi^{-1}(q)\). The author states without proof that if \(\dim B \leq 5\) and \(F\) is in general position then \(u_F:B \to \mathbb R\) is locally equivalent to a normal form from a certain list and the singularities of \(u_F\) also belong to a certain list. If \(\dim B\) is arbitrary, there still exists a topological equivalence. No details are given.
