Small generators of abelian number fields
For an algebraic number field \(K\) of degree \(d\) and discriminant \(\Delta_K\) denote by \(\delta(K)\) the minimal value of the absolute multiplicative Weil height\N\[\NH(\alpha)=\prod_v\max\{1,|\alpha|_v\}^{d/d_v}\N\]\N(with \(d_v=[K_v:\mathbb Q_v]\)) attained by a generator \(\alpha\) of \(K\).\N\NThe bound\N\[ \N\delta(K)\ll |\Delta_K^{1/2d}\tag{1}\N\] \Nhas been conjectured by \textit{W. M. Ruppert} [Manuscr. Math. 96, No. 1, 17--22 (1998; Zbl 0899.11063)] who established it for quadratic fields. Later, \textit{J. D. Vaaler} and \textit{M. Widmer} [Contemp. Math. 587, 201--211 (2013; Zbl 1307.11108)] proved (1) in the case when \(K\) is not totally complex and showed that for remaining fields it is a consequence of the General Riemann Hypothesis.\N\NThe author shows that if \(K\) is an abelian field of sufficiently large degree \(d\) then with finitely many exceptions one has\N\[\N\delta(K)\le(25|\Delta_K|)^{1/2d}.\N\]
