Solution to a function equation and divergence measures
Let \([a,b]\) denote a real interval. The authors investigates the so-called Levi-Civitá functional equation \[ \sum_{k=1}^nf_k(x)g_k(y)=G(x+y), \] where \(f_k,g_k:[a,b]\to\mathbb R\) and \(G:[2a,2b]\to\mathbb R\) are the unknowns. The main result of the paper states that, under the differentiability of \(f\) and \(g\), the function \(G\) is smooth and satisfies an \(n\)th order homogeneous linear differential equation with constant coefficients. Some applications for divergence measures are also presented. For further connected results, under quite general assumptions, consult also \textit{L.~Székelyhidi} [Convolution type functional equations on topological abelian groups.
