Some methods to find moment functions on hypergroups
Moment functions on a commutative hypergroup \(K\) form a useful tool to derive central limit theorems and strong laws for random walks on \(K\). This survey discusses in a systematic way two ways to obtain pairs of moment functions of order one and two. The first approach needs a differentiable parametrization for the dual space of \(K\) where the moment functions are constructed via suitable directional derivatives at the identity character. In this case, so-called positive Laplace representations lead to useful inequalities for the moment function. For a large class of one-dimensional polynomial hypergroups, these representations were derived by \textit{R. Lasser} and \textit{M. Rösler} [Arch. Math. 60, 459-463 (1993; Zbl 0781.33005)]. For one-dimensional Sturm-Liouville hypergroups, such representations were given by H. Chebli and Hm. Zeuner. The second approach to moment functions is based on asymptotic drifts related to the hypergroup convolution and was developed by the author in [Math. Z. 224, 427-444 (1997; Zbl 0876.43007)]. For the entire collection see [Zbl 0879.00047].
