This is a survey paper describing an algebraic approach to harmonic analysis on reductive Lie groups. The author considers the case of complex semisimple Lie groups in detail and discusses several problems for real reductive Lie groups. The main topics covered in the paper are: elementary modules over topological groups, symmetry conditions with respect to the Weyl group, group algebras, Harish-Chandra modules, and operational calculus.
