Spacetime wavelet method for the solution of nonlinear partial differential equations

From MaRDI portal

A high-order spacetime wavelet method is proposed for the solution of nonlinear partial differential equations with user-prescribed accuracy. The method employs wavelet basis functions and derivatives to discretize spatial and temporal dimensions simultaneously, eliminating semi-discretization and time-marching. A priori error estimates are used to control solution accuracy for both the solution and its derivatives. The resulting nonlinear system is solved using the Newton-Raphson method. A novel wavelet-based recursive algorithm is introduced to reduce system sensitivity arising from steep initial or boundary conditions. This algorithm progressively constructs an optimal initial guess and improves tangent matrix conditioning. Unlike conventional time-marching schemes, the method avoids timestep stability constraints and instead enforces a solvability condition. Parallelization is employed for tangent operator construction and solution of the algebraic system. Rigorous verification using Burgers' equation in 1D demonstrates high-order global convergence for multiscale problems. The method is successfully applied to the compressible Navier-Stokes equations in 1D for the Sod shock tube problem, confirming its effectiveness for shock-dominated flows.
