Let \(Diff^3_+([0,1])\) be the subgroup of \(Diff^1_+([0,1])\) consisting of all diffeomorphisms of class \(C^3\) of the interval \([0,1]\) that preserve the endpoints. A discrete subgroup \(G\) of \(Diff^3_+([0,1])\) satisfies condition \((a)\) if there exists a \(C>0\) such that sup\(_{t\in[0,1]}|g_1(t)-g_2(t)|\geq C\) for any \(g_1,g_2\in G,\;g_1\neq g_2\). The author proves Theorem 1. If a discrete subgroup \(G\) of \(Diff^3_+([0,1])\) satisfies condition \((a)\), then the subgroup \(G\) is amenable. As a corollary, he obtains that the Thompson group is amenable.
