\textit{R. K. S. Rathore} [''Linear combinations of linear positive operators and Generating Relations in Special functions'', Thesis, I.I.T. Delhi (1973)] and \textit{C. P. May} [Can. J. Math. 28, 1224-1250 (1976; Zbl 0342.41018)] have described a method for forming linear combinations of positive linear operators so as to improve the order of approximation of an \(f\in C([0,1])\) by Bernstein polynomials. In the present paper this technique has been adopted to study uniform approximation of an \(f\in C([0,1])\) by the integral modification of the Bernstein polynomials as introduced by \textit{J. L. Durrmeyer} [Une formule d'inversion de la transformée de Laplace: Applications à la théorie des moments, Thèse de 3e cycle (Paris, 1967)]. The theorem established here improves upon the corresponding result of \textit{M. M. Derriennic} [J. Approximation Theory 31, 325-343 (1981; Zbl 0475.41025)]. The author announces also that he has studied separately (preprints available) the corresponding problem for \(f\in L_ p([0,1])\), \(1\leq p<\infty\).
