Constitutive relations of the general form, \(dB/dt=\alpha | dH/dt| [f(H)-B]+(dH/dt)g(H)\), with f and g piecewise linear functions, appear to give a good description of rate-independent hysteresis in ferromagnetically soft materials of the isoperm type. When the time-course of the magnetic field H and an initial value \(B_ 0\) of the flux B are given, such relations become differential equations for B(t) that can be integrated explicitly. Expressions are derived here for various curves of interest to experimenters; among these are the initial magnetization curve, hysteresis loops with specified extremal values of H, and the boundary of the accessible region of the (H,B)-plane. The hysteresis loss associated with a general loop is found as a function of the extremal values of H. The stability of hysteresis loops and the limiting behavior of B when H oscillates in specified ways are discussed. Also treated are the restrictions placed on f and g by the requirement that dB/dt always agree in sign with dH/dt.
