The maximal rank conjecture states that, if C is a general curve, then, for a general embedding of C into \({\mathbb{P}}^ N\), \(N\geq 3\), the restriction map \(H^ 0(P^ N,{\mathcal O}_{{\mathbb{P}}^ N}(k))\to H^ 0(C,{\mathcal O}_ C(k))\) has maximal rank as a map of vector spaces, for all k. Within this ambit the paper proves two main theorems: \(1.\quad Fix\quad g, d\) with \(0\leq g\leq 3\), \(d\geq g+3\). Fix a curve X of genus g and L in \(Pic^ d(X)\). If \(g=3\) and X is hyperelliptic, assume \(d\geq 8\). Let \(\phi_ L(X)\) be the image of X by the complete linear system \(H^ 0(X,L)\). Then the image of a general projection of \(\phi_ L(X)\) into \({\mathbb{P}}^ 3\) has maximal rank. - \(2.\quad For\) every integer \(g\geq 0\), there exists an integer d(g,3) such that \(d\geq d(g,3)\), for every smooth curve X of genus g and every \(L\in Pic^ d(X)\), the image of the general projection of \(\phi_ L(X)\) into \({\mathbb{P}}^ 3\) has maximal rank.
