The author develops the theory of normal forms for t-periodic vector fields, fleshing out a brief description of the theory in the book by \textit{V. I. Arnold}, Geometrical methods in the theory of ordinary differential equations (1983; Zbl 0507.34003). The focus of the paper is on the qualitative properties of normal forms as a function of the Floquet exponents of the linearized vector field. Sufficient conditions are given for the normal form through terms of order k to be autonomous vector field. Sufficient conditions are also given for the normal form through terms of order k to be a linear autonomous vector field. The theory is applied to approximate invariant manifolds and the dynamics on these manifolds.
