Let E be a Banach space of measurable functions on a space (T,\(\Sigma\),\(\mu)\) with a \(\sigma\)-finite measure. One says that E is a Banach ideal space (BIS) if for a function \(f\in E\) all measurable functions g for which \(| g| \leq | f|\) also lie in E and \(\| g\| \leq \| f\|,\) Let X also be a Banach space. Then E(X) is the Banach space of measurable functions \(f: T\to X\) with the norm \(\| \| f(t)\|_ X\|_ E\). If X is also a BIS on some space S then E[X] is the Banach space of measurable functions on the space \(S\times T\) with norm \(\| \| f(t,s)\|_{X,s}\|_{E,t}.\) The author investigates the possibility of interpolation between spaces \(E_ 0(X_ 0)\) and \(E_ 1(X_ 1)\) or \(E_ 0[X_ 0]\) and \(E_ 1[X_ 1]\), where \(\{E_ 0,E_ 1\}\) and \(\{X_ 0,X_ 1\}\) are interpolation couples of Banach spaces. Some positive and negative results in this direction are given for the cases of first and second complex methods and for the Ovchinnikov's \(\phi\)-method. The results are announced earlier in the author's papers [Dokl. Akad. Nauk SSSR 260, No.2, 265-269 (1981; Zbl 0493.46062), 278, No.3, 523-526 (1984; Zbl 0606.46048) and 279, No.6, 1293-1296 (1984; Zbl 0604.46074)].
