The paper deals with the study of functionals F: \(X\to {\bar {\mathbb{R}}}\), where X is a topological vector space with a seminorm, and their relations with the inf-convolution \[ F\nabla \Phi_{\lambda}(x)=\inf \{F(y)+\Phi (\lambda x-\lambda y):\quad y\in X\}\quad (\lambda >0,\quad x\in X) \] where \(\Phi\) : \(X\to {\bar {\mathbb{R}}}\) is here called ``référentiel'', that is \(\Phi\) is convex, \(\Phi (x)=\Phi (-x)\), \(\Phi (0)=0\), \(\Phi\) is continuous at 0, \(\Phi (y)\Rightarrow +\infty\) as \(| y| \to +\infty\), and the gauge of \(\{\) \(\phi\leq 1\}\) is a seminorm equivalent to \(| \cdot |\). The relations with lower semicontinuous envelopes of functionals, and with epi-convergence and epi/hypo-convergence for sequences of functionals are investigated, as well as the Lipschitz properties of inf-convolutions. Several applications are indicated; in particular, the case of integral functionals \[ F(u)=\int_{\Omega}f(x,u)d\mu (x)\quad (x\in L^{\phi}(\Omega) \] is treated, where \(L^{\phi}(\Omega)\) is an Orlicz space.
