The paper concerns the Cauchy problem for the system \[ u^ i_{tt}- u^ i_{xx}+\Gamma^ i_{jk}(u)(u^ j_ tu^ k_ t-u^ j_ xu^ k_ x)=F^ i(t,x,u,u_ t,u_ x), \] i\(=1,...,m\), where \(\{\Gamma^ i_{jk}(u):\) \(i,j,k=1,...,m\), \(u\in R^ m\}\) is the system of Christoffel coefficients corresponding to a complete Riemannian metric on \(R^ m\). This system describes a perturbed harmonic mapping on two dimensional Minkowski space in a coordinate path. It is proved, that under growth conditions on \(F^ i\), \(i=1,...,m\), with respect to arguments \(u_ t\), \(u_ x\), the system has a global solution of class \(C^ k\), \(k\geq 2\), provided the initial data \(u(.,0)\in C^ k\), \(u_ t(.,0)\in C^{k-1}\).
