Let \(G_{p,2}(R)\) be the oriented real Grassmann manifold of 2-planes in \(R^{p+2}\). The purpose of the present paper is to characterize this manifold and its non-compact dual \(G^*_{p,2}(R)\) by means of a particular tensor field T and the Weingarten map on geodesic spheres. The tangent space at any point \(m\in G_{p,2}(R)\) can be identified with the vector space of all \(p\times 2\) matrices with inner product \(g(X,Y)=tr XY^ t.\) Let \(X_ 1\), \(X_ 2\) be column vectors of X. Then J defined by \(J(X_ 1,X_ 2)=(-X_ 2,X_ 1)\) is an almost complex structure and this makes g an invariant Kaehler metric on \(G_{p,2}(R)\). Based on this consideration the authors give a condition for a complete simply connected Kaehler manifold M(g,J) of dimension \(2p>2\) to be homothetic to either the Euclidean space, \(G_{p,2}(R)\) or \(G^*_{p,2}(R)\).
