Let k be a field of characteristic zero and \(S=k[X_ 1,...,X_ n]\) a polynomial ring. Let \(>\) be a multiplicative total ordering on the monomials of each degree in S. If Q is a homogeneous ideal in S then \(in_ >(Q)\) is the \(>\)-initial ideal of Q. Main result: Theorem. There is a canonical bijection between the set of ideals \(in_ >(Q)\) which arise as \(>\) varies over all multiplicative total orders on S and the set of vertices of the state polytope \({\mathcal P}(Q)\) of H(Q). The state polytope \({\mathcal P}(Q)\) is a convex polytope arising in the geometric invariant theory of the Hilbert point H(Q) of Q and its definition is given in {\S} 2.
