Let \(H^ p\) \((1<p<\infty)\) denote the Hardy space of all functions in \(L^ p\) on the unit circle. \(T(a)\) is the Toeplitz operator on \(H^ p\) which has the symbol \(a\) in \(L^ \infty\). Given \(a\in L^ \infty\), \(\Phi(a)\) denotes the set of all values \(p\in(1,\infty)\) for which \(T(a)\) is Fredholm on \(H^ p\). Then \(\Phi(a)=\bigcup\{\Phi_ k(a):\;k\in Z\},\) where \(\Phi_ k(a)\) denotes the collection of all \(p\in(1,\infty)\) such that \(T(a)\) is Fredholm of index \(k\) on \(H^ p\). The main result of this paper is that for any admissible \(\{I_ k\}_{k\in Z}\) there exists a function \(a\in L^ \infty\) such that \(\Phi_ k(a)=I_ k\) for all \(k\in Y\). This is proved the uniting part of the Gohberg-Krupnik and Sarason theories. The admissible family is a family \(\{I_ k\}_{k\in Z}\) of open (possibly empty and infinite) subintervals of \((1,\infty)\) such that \(I_ k\) lies to the left of \(I_ \ell\) if \(k>\ell\) and such that 1 and \(\infty\) are the only possible condensing points on the family \(\{I_ k\}\). This definition is natural and reasonable by the previously known result.
