A local method is presented for the construction of piecewise polynomial surfaces \(s(x,y)\in C^ k(R)\), \(k\geq 1\), which interpolate a function and its first derivatives over a rectangular grid and are co-monotone ( shape-preserving). For each edge of every rectangle, one-dimensional Bernstein polynomials of suitable degree are used, and then a blending functions scheme is applied to compute the surface in the inside. The method generalizes the tensor-product scheme of the first author and \textit{F. Fontanella} [SIAM J. Numer. Anal. 27, No. 2, 488-506 (1990; Zbl 0696.65006)].
