For a lattice \(L\) let \(\rho\) denote a homomorphism of \(L\) into a complemented modular lattice \(C\) and \(\pi: L\to L'\) a surjective homomorphism with lower adjoint \(\sigma: L'\to L\). For \(u\in C\) and for a homomorphism \(\rho': L'\to C\) the mapping \(\rho': x\to u+\rho\sigma(x)\) is called a contraction (of \(\rho\) along \(\pi\)). The author proves the following: Theorem. For a modular lattice \(L\) of finite length, contractions always exist. Moreover, \(\rho x/\rho y\) is transposed to \(\rho'\pi x/\rho'\pi y\) for every prime quotient \(x/y\) of \(L\) with \(\pi x\neq\pi y\). As a consequence one obtains that, for lattices of finite length, faithful vectorial representability transfers to homomorphic images. This is a contribution to Jónsson's question of which Arguesian lattices have representations [cf. \textit{J. B. Nation}, Jónsson's contributions to lattice theory, Algebra Univers. (to appear)].
