Let \(k\) be a field and let \(A=\bigoplus_{n=0}^ \infty A_ n\) be an associative \(\mathbb{Z}\)-graded \(k\)-algebra with augmentation ideal \(m=\bigoplus_{n>0} A_ n\). The author extends Grothendieck's duality formalism to the non-commutative setting. Since there is in general no local duality theorem, the author focuses on algebras having a balanced dualizing complex, i.e., a dualizing complex \(R^ .\) such that the cohomologies \(H_ m^*(R^ .)\) and \(H_{m^ 0}^*(R^ .)\) are only supported in degree 0, where they are isomorphic as bimodules to \(A'= \Hom_ k(A,k)\). For Noetherian algebras it is shown that this implies local duality. The author gives various classes of algebras, which possess a balanced dualizing complex: i) Noetherian regular algebras, ii) finitely generated \(k\)-algebras finite over their centers, iii) skew homogeneous coordinate rings. Finally, the results are applied to provide partial answers to two questions of M. Artin on the structure of the local cohomology groups \(H_ m^*(A)\).
